Movies | ‘Doctor Sleep’ Review: A Duller ‘Shining’ In this Stephen King adaptation, Ewan McGregor fights old and new demons. Credit... Jessica Miglio/Warner Bros. Doctor Sleep Directed by Mike Flanagan Drama, Fantasy, Horror, Thriller R 2h 31m “Doctor Sleep, ” Mike Flanagan’s adaptation of the novel by Stephen King, catches up with Danny Torrance, who as a child was terrorized by demons and his own father at a spooky Rocky Mountain hotel. That was in “The Shining, ” published by King in 1977 and filmed by Stanley Kubrick in a movie released in 1980. The new film, depending on how you look at it, is a sequel, an update, a corrective or a disaster. King was never a fan of Kubrick’s cold, meticulous gothic, which has nonetheless gathered a sturdy cult following. Flanagan, while hewing more closely to the novelist’s ideas about evil, innocence and addiction, pays tribute to some of Kubrick’s visual signatures, especially in flashbacks that take grown-up Dan (as he’s called now) back to the Overlook. He remembers a dad (Henry Thomas) with darting Jack Nicholson eyebrows and a mother (Alex Essoe) with Shelley Duvall saucer eyes. Dan, played by a subdued Ewan McGregor, has had a hard time of it. After his mother’s death, he spirals into alcoholism, eventually finding solace and sobriety in a small New Hampshire town. He also finds a job, as an orderly in a home for the elderly, and a friend, named Billy (Cliff Curtis). The ghouls who used to haunt him have been put away, thanks to a mental trick he learns from the ghost of his old pal Dick Hallorann (Carl Lumbly, in the role played by Scatman Crothers in “The Shining. ”) Meanwhile — well, there’s a whole lot of meanwhile. In print, “Doctor Sleep” runs to 531 pages, which is fairly compact by King’s recent standards. This screen adaptation feels like a clumsy hybrid. It’s a little too long and winding to work as a feature film, especially in the horror genre, and might have worked better as a limited series, with a little more room for the many characters who populate its grimly imagined American landscape. Its slow pacing and diffuse suspense make the experience more like a book on tape than anything else, in spite of a few lively performances. Dan joins forces with a young girl named Abra (Kyliegh Curran, making an impressive film debut), who lives in another part of New Hampshire and who has gifts similar to his. Though if his extrasensory abilities shine, hers blaze like stadium lights. Her powers attract the attention of a predatory cabal known as the Knot, who travel the country in a caravan looking for psychically talented children to torture and kill. Their leader is Rose (Rebecca Ferguson), a blue-eyed seductress in a Babadook hat. The Knot feeds on steam, which is the soul energy (or something) that escapes from shiners in their death throes. Sometimes, as in the case of a sullen teenager (Emily Alyn Lind), the Knot recruits youngsters instead of devouring them. It’s not clear what they plan to do with Abra, but she and Dan fight back using wild mental tricks which Flanagan conveys by means of mostly pedestrian, occasionally surprising special effects. “Doctor Sleep” is a not a Stephen-King-scares-the-pants-off-you kind of movie. It’s a Stephen-King-invites-you-to-ponder-the-nature-of-evil kind of movie. ( “It” managed to be both; “It Chapter Two” failed to be either. ) There are some bad sections — the gratuitously sadistic rendering of a Knot victim’s fate — and some not-bad ones. Nothing that will keep you awake at night, but you probably won’t fall asleep in the middle either. Doctor Sleep Rated R. Ambient evil. Running time: 2 hours 31 minutes.

Published on Sep 8, 2019 The World Will Shine Again. "Stephen King"s Doctor Sleep" Only in Theaters November 8. -------...... ------- “Doctor Sleep” continues the story of Danny Torrance, 40 years after his terrifying stay at the Overlook Hotel in The Shining. Ewan McGregor, Rebecca Ferguson and newcomer Kyliegh Curran star in the supernatural thriller, directed by Mike Flanagan, from his own screenplay based upon the novel by Stephen King. Still irrevocably scarred by the trauma he endured as a child at the Overlook, Dan Torrance has fought to find some semblance of peace. But that peace is shattered when he encounters Abra, a courageous teenager with her own powerful extrasensory gift, known as the “shine. ” Instinctively recognizing that Dan shares her power, Abra has sought him out, desperate for his help against the merciless Rose the Hat and her followers, The True Knot, who feed off the shine of innocents in their quest for immortality. Forming an unlikely alliance, Dan and Abra engage in a brutal life-or-death battle with Rose. Abra’s innocence and fearless embrace of her shine compel Dan to call upon his own powers as never before—at once facing his fears and reawakening the ghosts of the past. “Doctor Sleep” stars Ewan McGregor (“Star Wars: Episodes I, II & III, ” “T2 Trainspotting”) as Dan Torrance, Rebecca Ferguson (the “Mission: Impossible” films, “The Greatest Showman”) as Rose the Hat, and Kyliegh Curran, in her major feature film debut, as Abra. The main ensemble cast also includes Carl Lumbly, Zahn McClarnon, Emily Alyn Lind, Bruce Greenwood, Jocelin Donahue, Alex Essoe and Cliff Curtis. Trevor Macy and Jon Berg produced the film, with Roy Lee, Scott Lumpkin, Akiva Goldsman and Kevin McCormick serving as executive producers. Reviewed in the United States on November 9, 2019 I found Doctor Sleep, based on the book by Stephen King and the sequel to The Shining, to be really, really good. This is directed by Mike Flanagan (The Haunting of Hill House) who has proven himself to be one of the great horror auteurs. (He previously adapted Stephen King"s Gerald"s Game, which was an impressive effort considering that it was mostly a person handcuffed to a bed. ) The pacing works really well for a movie running at two-and-a-half hours. The dialogue is some of the best flowing I"ve seen in a while. The cinematography and general look are also top notch. Horror fans, be forewarned that there are not that many scares. This time the main foe isn"t ghosts, but the True Knot, psychic energy vampires. They"re powerful, but they have basic human personalities and certain limitations. But, it"s a really good story! You get to learn a lot more about the world of shining (psychic powers). The personal journey of psychic and recovering alcoholic Danny Torrence and his relationship with young shiner Abra (Kyliegh Curran) is interesting. What the True Knot lack in frightening appearances, they make up with being fleshed-out characters who make very dangerous antagonists. Though not the scariest film, this works really well as a dark tale. Also, scene where you see the True Knot in action is one truly scary moment that will stick with you. The leads, McGregor, Curran, and Rebecca Ferguson as the True Knot"s leader Rose the Hat, all do an excellent job. (Yes, I concede the villain names are silly. ) However, McGregor"s American accent doesn"t sound quite natural. Also for flashback purposes and such, Flanagan got some very convincing actors to mimic the ones from the Shining. Remember when I said the pacing "mostly" works? The one weak point is reliance on nostalgia. The movie tries to be both an adaptation of Doctor Sleep but also stay true to the events specific to Stanley Kubrick"s The Shining. Fans of the book could be disappointed by changes. Several of elements involving the previous movie work. But there are moments where it can"t help but give direct "wink, wink" references to the original"s scenes and shots. It feels forced and the cinematography feels off with the rest of the film. However, there is only a very small percentage of these elements in the movie. Mostly it is its own thing. Of the recent Stephen King movies (including the Netflix ones), this is my favorite. In fact, I think it"s one of the best Stephen King adaptations ever made. Reviewed in the United States on November 12, 2019 Theater review. Possible spoilers. It’s been 39 years since poor 5 year old Danny Torrance escaped his father’s attempt to kill him and his mother in Colorado’s Overlook Hotel (“The Shining”). Stephen King’s novel is a direct sequel as is this film. Danny (Ewan McGregor) is now grown up, but is still haunted by those events decades ago. Living on the east coast he hasn’t much of a life. Drunk most of the time, he spends his time sleeping where and with whoever he can. He’s often comforted by the spirit of Dick Hallorann (Carl Lumbly replacing Scatman Crothers from “The Shining”). Danny, sometimes called Doc, decides to get on a bus and escape his current situation. He gets off in a small town in New Hampshire and is quickly befriended by Billy Freeman (Cliff Curtis) who runs a mini-version of the town square…uh, on the town square. Billy sees something in Danny that reminds him of himself years earlier. That is, an alcoholic in a desperate situation. Danny goes with Billy to an AA meeting and we jump forward 8 years and Danny is sober, working in a hospice. He has a strong version of telepathy that he calls the “shine. ” He’s able to help the dying patients comfortably make the transition to the afterlife. One day he’s greeted by a note written on a wall in his room from another with similar abilities. A 13 year old girl named Abra (newcomer Kyliegh Curran). Across the country in Iowa, a collective cult with range of psycho-powers called The True Knot are found, literally sucking the life out of children. First a 6-year old girl in a park, then in a horrific scene with a 10-year old boy played by Jacob Tremblay (“Good Boys”). A word of warning, this scene is cringe worthy, if not gory. Essentially, members of The True Knot, led by Rose the Hat (terrific Rebecca Ferguson) inhale the misty essence that is exhaled when people die. The greater the pain, the more powerful the essence. With this “food, ” the group’s members can have a life that can last centuries. Both the little girl and the boy have the "shine", so these are the people Rose and her herd seek out. Back in New Hampshire, Abra is sensing Rose and the True Knot’s evil. Abra has a powerful "shine" and even manages to get inside the head of Rose. When Rose feels the intrusion she is bent on finding the girl and absorbing her essence. This central part of the film is its most absorbing. The linkage to the Colorado is left behind. It becomes an excellent cat and mouse game. One with potentially deadly implications. We discover that while the True Knot can live forever theoretically, they can also be killed so they still have to be careful. With Abra’s prodding, Dan takes on a new role which is to eliminate the True Knot. He is assisted by Abra’s mental powers as well as some help from Billy. They will eventually collide leaving Dan and Abra having to combine their abilities against Rose. Dan believes to make the odds more in their favor, they need to lure Rose to the now closed Overlook Hotel in Colorado. Frankly that seemed to be unnecessary but then it reconnects the story back to “The Shining. ” What was once essentially a standalone film now takes on the effect of a true sequel. I have mixed feelings about it. The film is directed and written by Mike Flanagan (“Ouija: Origin of Evil” and TV’s “The Haunting of Hill House”) based on King’s book. He’s pretty good at horror films and this might be his best. One can nitpick about some of the elements – how is it Danny can remember the details of the Overlook Hotel as he was only 5 at the time? – but the film is still effective as a horror film made for grownups. "The Shining" was an exception because the screen-writer had the good sense to know what would not work in a movie. This one like most other films based on King"s writing is not good. There is so much violence to children in this film - I found it unwatchable. I fast forwarded through several scenes where children are being victimized. What happened to King"s writing (somewhere around "Pet Cemetery") that began involving violence to children. Of course this happens in the world, but it is NOT entertainment material. Hard pass on this film, and I"m not getting fooled again. No more films based on King"s books. His HBO"s "The Outsiders" is no better, and also involves horrible violence to children. All things considered this film is just bad. Reviewed in the United States on January 22, 2020 Verified Purchase I love the fact Flannigan was able to tie the Books with the previous film. My biggest concern was how he was going to be able to achieve the tie in. It was seamless and catered to both the fans of the novel and fans of the movie. All in all i give this 5 stars. This week we are glad to have before you a movie adaptation of Stephen King’s thriller, Doctor Sleep. The book, Doctor Sleep, was published in 2013 and filmmakers moved quickly to give the masses the sequel to The Shining they’ve been waiting for. So let’s dive deep into this thriller. First, the movie is beautiful visually. I did have some qualms with the younger versions of characters used, but that’s not important. Nevertheless, there are some really cool flying/floating/Dr. Strange-like sequences in the movie. The movie has some good CGI technology, but there could have been even more. The storyline is cool even though I got annoyed with the interchangeable nature of their use of the word shining and steam. PICK ONE ALREADY! Sorry for that outburst. Next, I would’ve appreciated more depth into the explanation of shining, steam, and the individual new characters. This explanation is something that I’m sure, in the novel, Stephen King got into thoroughly. Even without the full look into each character, individually all of the actors did a solid job. Rebecca Ferguson, as Rose The Hat, is simply enchanting. I really enjoyed her performance of the character. Ewan as Danny… not so much. I can’t tell if he did a bad job or the writing and directing was that poor. Either way Ewan needed a do over. Unfortunately, Doctor Sleep was more of a walk down memory lane than a hotly anticipated horror classic sequel. Nothing is truly creepy about this movie, compared to The Shining, but the viewer does get 2 or 3 eerie or tough moments to view. Mainly, we got some of the classic movie scenes from The Shining, with further detail bringing us to the present, mixed with a completely different storyline. The director relied too much upon the strength of The Shining rather than fully embracing what is cool and creepy about the Doctor Sleep book. In reality, the Doctor Sleep storyline could be way more creepy and enthralling than was displayed. The movie does an okay job giving us to the idea but is far too shallow. The viewer needs more depth and I’m sure the book fans would agree. Flanagan failed to make us dive deep into the movie/pages of the book. What the viewer got was a slightly creepier version of Darkest Minds, Twilight and Hocus Pocus. On top of that, the horror fans would be left wanting by the end of the movie. Long story short, Doctor Sleep failed in the ways of a horror movie but succeeded in the ways of a teen coming of age superhero origin story. If you’re looking to be scared like The Shining, you will be disappointed but if you come to be entertained and held in suspense, this may be a the movie for you. Horror/Shining fans, I would recommend just catching this on netflix but everyone else I’d recommend a matinee showing, if you have a free 2 hours and 20 minutes on this chilly Veteran’s Day weekend.

I like that Lloyds not going for an imitation of Nicholson, but rather an evocation of his general aura through very subtle accents. It pays homage to the original, while also making it his own. Fun fact: this guy is Elliot from E.T. As someone who struggles with addiction, I really appreciated this scene. Its like the internal dialogue some of us have in our heads when struggling not to use: a battle between the frontal lobes and the amygdala. Watching it have a positive outcome helps me make the right choice in real life. This is going to be crazy! ???? Can"t wait.
